Social networks of highly skilled third country nationals in Prague
Peloušek, Filip ; Jelínková, Marie (advisor) ; Plaček, Michal (referee)
The diploma thesis is devoted to the social group of highly qualified migrants from third countries living and working in Prague. It deals with what social ties played a role in their migration process, what relationships they established after their arrival in the Czech Republic, and how these contacts helped them face possible problems associated with their relocation. To understand the structure of these social ties, the work uses theory of migration networks, which helps explain how different social ties help reduce the risks and costs associated with migration and how possible migration flows are maintained over time. This theory is complemented by the theory of social ties related to migration according to the work of Granovetter (1973), who is distinguishing between strong and weak social ties of migrating individuals. As part of the practical part of the research, 8 interviews were conducted with highly qualified foreigners in Prague, which were subsequently subjected to a thematic analysis. The research pointed out that migration networks occupy important positions in the lives of groups of highly qualified migrants living in Prague, when these networks significantly facilitate the process of migration itself and help them either completely eliminate or better solve problems arising from...
Networks of Interest Groups - Interest Groups, their Positions and Relations in EU Legislative Process
Bubeníčková, Veronika ; Karlas, Jan (advisor) ; Parízek, Michal (referee)
This diploma thesis examines networking of interest groups. It presents potentional entrance points for influencing legislative processes in the EU. The thesis focuses mainly on European Commission's public consultations. It tries to answer the question whether the interest groups cooperate strategically or whether they try to reach their goals on their own. This thesis is grounded in the framework of the network theory and uses the method of graphic modeling. For the research we have selected three areas of European Commission's consultations. The participating interest groups were chosen based on their characteristics and the consultations they took part in. We have found out that among the interest groups gathered around European Commission there is no close collaboration taking place. Furthermore, the interest groups act rather spontaneously as they are generally only taking part in individual consultations. Only 12.3% of them participated in more than one consultation and they were mainly registered organizations.

Czech Migration and Integration Policies in the Perspective of Mongolian Migration
Jelínková, Marie ; Kotrusová, Miriam (advisor) ; Drbohlav, Dušan (referee) ; Muhič Dizdarevič, Selma (referee)
In the period between the years 2006 and 2008, a significant increase in the migration of Mongolians to the Czech Republic could be seen. The Mongolians came to the Czech Republic mainly through formal and informal intermediary agencies and most of them worked as unskilled labor. With a few exceptions, they originally arrived to the CR with work and residence permits, yet a large part of them lost their permits during their first two years of stay. Even those who managed to live and work in the CR legally faced frequent violations of their rights. The research on Mongolian migration presented in this doctoral thesis was carried out as a case study. By looking at this specific problem area, fundamental problems posed for Mongolian migrants by the set-up of the Czech migration and integration policies could be analyzed. This work does not address these policies only and the ways they are set up, but also the manner of implementation and the specific impact of these policies on the life of the monitored migrants. It shows that major problems in the way migration policy is set up and regulated are encountered already by the visa applicants still in Mongolia. The results of the research also show that Czech migration policies put a large part of the Mongolian respondents into positions of dependency on...

Spatial Distribution of Immigrants in Italy
Pavelková, Lenka ; Drbohlav, Dušan (advisor) ; Siwek, Tadeusz (referee)
This thesis focuses on spatial distribution of immigrants in Italy. In the beginning, it presents three migration theories used in the thesis (network theory, Human Capital Model, institutional theory) and related hypothesis for the research. Then it summarises the migration history of Italy since the Second World War and the current situation. After that, the tex proceeds to the examination of the spatial distribution of immigrants in Italy. The examination is done in two ways. First, there is analysis of statistical data by correlation analysis which tries to find factors which explain the immigrants' distribution in Italy. Second is the analysis of the results of a survey done in Trieste, Italy, between March and June 2011 among the two largest groups of immigrants living in the province of Trieste (those with citizenship of Serbia and Romania). The main results are that one of the most important factors for the immigrants' distribution are the job opportunities and better earnings for themselves and for their families. Interestingly, the network theory wasn't supported by the research, especially for Romanians who seem to prefer provinces with less Romanians (and foreigners in general) already present. After the analysis, the results are compared with the situation in the Czech Republic. For further...
